The 25:8 GrindThe Struggles of Entrepreneurship and Rest

As entrepreneurs, we can all agree that there never seem to be enough hours in the day.   There's always something today.   Being a boss reminds me of the Kid Cudi song "Day and Night":

"Day and night

I toss and turn; I keep stress in my mind, mind

I look for peace, but see, I don't attain…"

Where the hustle culture is celebrated, rest and self-care seem like luxuries that busy entrepreneurs can't afford. However, neglecting these essential aspects of well-being can seriously affect your health and business success.

Self-care involves taking deliberate actions to preserve or improve health. For entrepreneurs, self-care is beneficial and necessary for long-term success. Why are rest and self-care crucial?

·       It improves decision-making: Building and running a business requires sustained energy and focus. The CDC reports that getting 7-9 hours of sleep per night is essential for maintaining energy levels and overall health.

·       It reduces stress: "Adequate rest helps us regulate emotions, reduce stress, and prevent burnout. This emotional balance is critical for maintaining motivation and a positive outlook, which are important for productive work and effective problem-solving". [1]

Practical Strategies for Integrating Rest and Self-Care

·       Prioritize sleep: Entrepreneurs should aim for 7-9 hours each night. I can hear the collective sigh right now! "Insufficient sleep duration is associated with an increased risk of several chronic conditions—such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, anxiety, and depression."[2]

·       Nourish your body:  Maintain a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Proper nutrition fuels your body and mind, helping you feel your best. Regular exercise benefits both physical and mental health. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week—schedule exercise and meal preparation into your day, just like other commitments.

In a world that often glorifies nonstop work, taking time for rest and self-care is a powerful act of self-respect and a critical investment in you and your business.
